Desmos: the tool every student has and almost nobody uses well

Desmos: the tool every student has and almost nobody uses well

Every student who sits for the digital SAT has the Desmos graphing calculator built into the test app. It is the single most underused advantage on the exam. Most students either ignore it entirely or fumble with it for the first time on test day, which is roughly like discovering your car has a fifth gear during the driving test.

The College Board did not add Desmos as decoration. It is a full graphing calculator, always one click away, on every math question. The exam is written in full knowledge that students have it. Which means some questions are deliberately fast for the student who graphs and deliberately slow for the student who grinds through the algebra.

A concrete example

Some of this deserves algebra. Some of it deserves a graph. Knowing which is the skill.

The judgment matters more than the tool

There are also habits worth drilling: knowing the handful of keystrokes that set up a table, using a slider to test a parameter, tracing a curve to a clean intercept. None of them are hard. All of them are worthless if the first attempt happens under exam pressure.

We even keep a library of questions specifically chosen because the graphing route is dramatically faster, so students build the reflex of spotting them. By exam day, reaching for the right approach is a habit, not a gamble.

Free advice for any student reading this: open Desmos during every practice session starting today. Familiarity on test day is worth real points, and it costs nothing but repetition.
