The forgetting curve, and how to beat it

The forgetting curve, and how to beat it

Here is an uncomfortable fact from a century of memory research: within a few days, students forget most of what they just learned. That is not a discipline problem or an intelligence problem. It is how human memory works, and any study plan that ignores it is quietly leaking most of the effort a student puts in.

The psychologist Hermann Ebbinghaus mapped this in the 1880s and called it the forgetting curve. Memory fades fast at first, then more slowly. But he also found the antidote: every time you successfully recall something just before you would have forgotten it, the memory gets stronger and the curve flattens. Recall it a few times on the right schedule and it becomes close to permanent.

Why rereading feels good and works badly

Highlighting has the same problem. A highlighted page is a page the student has touched, not a page the student knows. If you want a fast honesty check, close the book and write down everything you remember from the section. Whatever did not make it onto the paper is what still needs work. Students find this unpleasant precisely because it works: the discomfort of retrieval is the feeling of a memory being strengthened.

More hours in the library is not the answer. Better-arranged hours is.

The desirable difficulty rule

What this means for SAT prep

  • Space sessions out. Three shorter sessions across a week beat one long one.
  • Close the notes and self-test. If you cannot produce it, you do not know it yet.
  • Mix domains once skills are learned. Sorting problems is a skill of its own.
  • Bring old material back on purpose. Mastered last month is not mastered forever.

Students do not need to know the research to benefit from it. The system quietly runs it in the background of every session, and what the family sees is simply that material learned in week two is still solid in week ten.

The students who reach 1500 are rarely the ones who studied the most hours. They are the ones whose hours were arranged so that nothing they learned was allowed to fade.
