How to tell if tutoring is actually working

How to tell if tutoring is actually working

After thirty years of teaching, I can tell you the most common failure in tutoring is not bad teaching. It is invisible teaching. The sessions happen, the homework happens, the invoices happen, and after three months nobody can say precisely what changed.

Parents sense this, but it is an awkward thing to press on. The tutor is pleasant. The student says the sessions are fine. Pushing for proof feels like an accusation. So most families wait for the next official score to find out whether the last three months worked, which is the most expensive possible way to learn that they did not.

Effort is not evidence

The gap between taught and learned

Questions worth asking any program, including ours

A good program answers these easily, because it was already tracking them. A weak one answers with adjectives. Doing great. Working hard. Really coming along. Adjectives are what programs use when they do not have data.

Parents see the same dashboard we do: which skills moved this week, which are stuck, what came back for review, and how the minutes were actually spent. Practice scores are labeled as practice, and when one changes, we can point at the specific skills that caused the change. Between sessions, nothing is invisible.

What progress should feel like month by month

You should never have to wonder whether it is working. If you cannot see the progress, ask why not. And if the answer is an adjective, keep asking.

Whatever program you choose, ours or anyone's, insist on evidence. Your student's time is the one budget you cannot refill.
